Denver Public Schools Retro Commissioning
Group14 Engineering conducted retro-commissioning (RCx) for Denver Public Schools to troubleshoot equipment operation and lower energy use for existing schools. For Slavens K-8 school, Group14 identified key issues with the heat pump system operation which greatly impacted the comfort of the building. Resolving these issues provided major improvements in the local environment for the teachers and students. Montbello is home to several high school level charter schools and contains many classrooms, multiple gyms, and other school support services. Testing and troubleshooting was conducted at Montbello on over 25 air handling units and multiple central plants to uncover operational issues and energy saving opportunities.
For both schools, Group14 utilized SkySpark monitoring-based commissioning (MBCx) software which provides a web based platform to automatically detect operating issues. This tool was used to quickly identify issues and verify improvements with monitoring over multiple seasons. Through the use of this tool and hands on testing.
Group14 identified energy saving opportunities in these schools totaling over $60,000 year, around 15% of the total energy cost.
“The AC has been cycling on and off, high and low, just like it’s supposed to, for the last two weeks. I couldn’t be happier, and I almost feel like a new person!” Slavens K-8 Music Teacher after commissioning repairs were completed.
